The 4.42km long Yongjong Bridge is the part of the new highway and railway system constructed to connect Seoul, the capital of Korea, to a new Inchon International Airport. The Airport built to satisfy air traffic demands of East Asia and Korea is located in Yongjong Island. The main design considerations for the Bridge was functionality as the highway-railway bridge and the symbol of Korean traditional culture. The Bridge has double decks and carries 6 lane highways on the upper deck and 4-lane highways and railways on the lower deck. The bridge is composed of three different types: the 550m long suspension bridge, the truss bridge, and the steel box girder bridge. The suspension bridge is the first spatial self-anchored suspension bridge in the world. New innovative construction methods were devised and applied to erect the suspension bridge and truss bridge.
