The mitochondrial genome of fission yeast contains two group I introns in the gene encoding the first subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (cox1) and a group II intron in the gene encoding apocytochrome b (cob). In a previous paper (Wolf, 1994), it was shown that the first cox1 intron is mobile in crosses. Here we present evidence that the second cox1 intron is also mobile. Furthermore we report on the homing of the group II intron in the cob gene. A possible mechanism of homing and transposition of group II introns via an RNA intermediate is discussed
