Lightweight materials are used to reduce the weight of helicopters. Compared to aluminium, which is still frequently used, these materials are not only lighter but also offer the possibility to design material properties specifically for the loadings involved. Due to the countless possibilities for combination that are offered, design engineers are faced with the challenge of observing a large number of parameters during the development. In order to improve the development process for components made of composite materials while taking into account both material parameters and production constraints, computer-aided design and optimisation are being integrated into the development process.
