Natural occurrence of pelargonium flower break virus infecting Pelargonium zonale plants in South America

Abstract In 2023, virus‐like symptoms were observed in Pelargonium zonale plants in Brazil. Transmission electron microscope analysis revealed the presence of isometric particles measuring ca. 30 nm in diameter in leaf extracts and ultrathin sections of symptomatic field plants. Molecular assays using PFBV‐specific primers and sequencing of amplicons identified the pelargonium flower break virus （PFBV, genus Alphacarmovirus ）. Mechanically inoculated plants of Chenopodium quinoa and P. zonale exhibited symptoms of chlorotic local lesions and systemic chlorotic spots, respectively. This is the first report of PFBV infecting P. zonale plants in South America （Brazil）.
