Music literature indexing: A comparison between users’ free‐text queries and controlled vocabularies

Subject indexing of music literature is known to be difficult because of language barriers and the vocabulary problem. Prior research has validated the necessity of indexing documents based on users’’ search queries. This study examined the characteristics of users’’ free‐text queries created in a music literature database （RILM） and compared those queries with the controlled vocabularies used by the database. This poster presents a typology of 11 categories of user‐created search terms identified in RILM. The findings indicate that the controlled vocabularies used by RILM align well with the user search terms. Based on the findings, suggestions are offered to enhance and improve the controlled vocabularies for music literature indexing.
