Abstract The reason that in oilfield wastewater treatment the Fe2+/persulfate oxidation system demonstrated more efficient than polyferric flocculation system, revealing the mechanism of reaction, was discussed. FT-IR and XRD results showed that poly ferric were generated during the process of Fe2+/persulfate oxidation; LC-MS analysis indicated that the ·SO4- produced in the Fe2+/persulfate system mainly played the role of aggregation. Fe2+/persulfate system online generation of poly iron and ·SO4 polymerization has a synergistic effect. By all studies there was a synergistic effect between polyferric formed online and ·SO4 polymerization in Fe2+/ persulfate oxidation system.
