Sol-gel Synthesis of La2Ti2O7 Modified with PEG4000 for the Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract A sol-gel method was used to synthesis La2Ti2O7 photocatalysts using PEG4000 as the template. La2Ti2O7 particle size sharply decreases with the addition of PEG4000. An impurity phase of La0.66TiO2.993 is introduced in the perovskite La2Ti2O7 after addition of more than 1.0 g PEG4000. Specific surface areas of the samples are gradually enlarged with increasing amount of PEG4000, accompanied with shrinking average pore size. Both of photocatalytic degradation and adsorption efficiencies of RBR-X3B increase along with the addition of PEG4000. The La2Ti2O7 sample using 1.5 g PEG4000 has the maximum photocatalytic activity, on which nearly 95.3% of the initial RBR-X3B is decolorized after 120 min of irradiation. Only 43.2% of the RBR-X3B is decolorized on the initial La2Ti2O7 after the same time. This is in accordance to the formation of hydroxyl radicals as a factor of the addition of PEG4000.
