摘   要:

To enhance sustainable water management and reduce ecosystem and human health consequences, domestic laundry wastewater and water consumption issues must be investigated. Domestic laundry wastewater discharge increases microfiber and surfactant pollutants in aquatic habitats, which harm humans and the environment. This study examines powdered activated carbon (PAC)'s ability to remove micro/nanofibers from domestic laundry washing machine effluent with or without surfactant. To simulate real-world scenarios, we studied the PAC adsorption kinetics and isotherms in the effluents under controlled conditions. Isotherm and kinetic studies showed that the kinetics obeyed a pseudo-second-order process and the isotherms varied between Langmuir and Freundlich models depending on the water types. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of the 0.1 μm filtered laundry wastewater was higher (contains nanofibers) than the raw ones (contains microfibers). Even though this study is preliminary, the results indicate that PAC has the capacity to serve as a viable approach for mitigating micro/nanoplastic and surfactant contaminations from laundry wastewater, thereby offering valuable guidance for advancing eco-friendly laundry techniques. Further investigation is required to comprehensively comprehend the mechanisms underlying intricate interplays that exhibit synergistic outcomes, thereby enabling the optimization of wastewater treatment techniques.
