Ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets grown on hollow carbon spheres as advanced separator coating for superior electrochemical behaviors of Li–S batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage systems due to their high specific capacity and energy density. However, the severe shuttle effect of long-chain polysulfide leads to low active sulfur utilization, resulting in rapid capacity fading and poor cycle stability. And this hinders the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this work, MoS2 nanosheets@hollow carbon spheres (MSNSs@HCSs) composites are prepared and employed as the separator coating materials of lithium-sulfur batteries. The MSNSs@HCSs could adsorb the polysulfide and accelerate the conversion of long-chain polysulfide to short-chain ones, thereby inhibiting the polysulfide shuttle effect. As a result, lithium-sulfur batteries with MSNSs@HCSs coated separators could deliver a high initial specific capacity of 1182 mAh/g at 0.2 C. Moreover, when the rate increased to 2 C, the capacity could reach 806 mAh/g after 300 cycles at 2 C.
