The commencement of hostilities bet ween Japan and China, for some time previous seriously threatened, is said to have occurred on July 25, when a fleet of Chinese transports, loaded with troops, was attacked off the Corean coast by Japanese gunboats, and many Chinese soldiers were killed and drowned. The cause of the difficulty between the two countries lies in their respective claims upon Corea, a peninsula on the northeast coast of China, sometimes called the "hermit" kingdom, and from which foreigners have been generally excluded. . © 1894 Scientific American, Inc.
