The new bacterial catalyst,  hydroxylates 1,8-cineole ( ) to give 6R- -hydroxy-1,8-cineole, [(1R,4S,6R)-1,3,3-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo(2,2,2)-octane-6-ol], ( ). The regio- and stereochemical outcome of this reaction was predicted using a model for the  .  hydroxylase.
