Summary Nineteen cases of spina bifida and cranium bifidum admitted to the S.N. Children's Hospital, Allahabad, during the period
from November 1976 to June 1978 are reported. Of the 7 cases of meningocoele, all were operated upon with good results. Of
the 8 cases of myelomeningocoele, survival rate was higher in those who were operated upon. Children with marked paraplegia
and local sepsis were not operated on and the mortality was high in this group. Of the 4 cases of encephalocoele, 3 were operated
upon and 2 survived. One case, a neonate with poor general condition was not operated on and expired shortly after admission.
